The One Thing Souvenir Ritual

This is the ritual that's stayed with me through every season of travel. Every trip. Every city. Every year.

I bring home one thing.

One intentional, meaningful, timeless thing.

Not a magnet. Not a snow globe. Not a t-shirt that says "Paris" in cursive across the front that I will wear approximately once and then use as a sleep shirt.

One thing that is timeless. One thing that is usable. One thing that, every time I encounter it, brings me back.

A scarf from Bath, England — a soft grey cashmere I still wear on fall mornings, and when I wrap it around my shoulders I can still smell the bookshop we wandered into on our last afternoon.

A linen tote from Paris — the kind you see slung over every Parisian woman's shoulder. Mine has a small stain from a café au lait and I refuse to remove it.

A perfume from a small London shop that I've re-ordered four times now, because it's simply the smell of that trip.

A silver bracelet from a Sunriver flea market — picked out with my daughter the summer before she left for college. She has one too. We wear them without coordinating it.

Velvet Flabelus flats from Paris — completely impractical, utterly perfect, never leaving my closet.

The rule, if I have one, is this:

Timeless. Usable. Brings you back.

Not something that looked wonderful in the shop window and is completely wrong for your real life. Not something you're buying because you feel like you should get something.

Something that earns a spot in your regular life and quietly carries that trip along with it.

Try it on your next adventure. You'll come home with less — and remember it more. ✨
